“Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion”
— Martha Graham
Take A Class
class Levels & Experience
-
For those with no dance experience whatsoever, looking to start dancing for the first time as an adult. Classes are taught at the pace of the students, with lots of emphasis on repetition, and are based on foundational skills.
-
For those with some experience in the chosen style, or some general fundamental technique. Choreography is taught at a slower pace with more repetition, and is based on foundational skills, with some light introduction to new movement patterns.
-
For dancers with strong foundations looking to refine technique, musicality, and styling. Choreography builds in complexity and extends beyond the foundations in the chosen style.
-
For dancers with a strong technique foundation looking to focus more on quality of execution, musicality, and/or looking to refine their ability to retain choreography quickly. Students may require an assessment to join some advanced courses. It is recommended to have a high degree of strength, mobility, and coordination to participate in these classes.
-
Open to dancers of all levels, with opportunities for increasing or decreasing the difficulty. Some dance experience is recommended to join an open level class.
The Studio, People, and Space
The Underdog Dance Corp. is Waterloo's first dance studio for adult beginners. We make dance enjoyable and movement fun, and many students view our studio as a friendly "second home." We prioritize safety, inclusivity, and respect. Founded in 2020 by a former civil engineer, we have grown from 4 to 13 instructors and serve 1,100 students with 30 classes weekly. Our skilled instructors ensure everyone feels comfortable—no partner or experience needed. Let’s dance!
Beautiful and Historic
Our studio was once a brewery built in 1939. We are right next to the historic Huether Hotel in Uptown Waterloo. We love our large old windows and the industrial vibe, which fills the space with natural light during the day and offers beautiful views of King Street at night. There are even rumors of tunnels beneath the studio from the Prohibition era!
It’s the Little Things
Our studio frequently makes improvements for your benefit. We provide a gender-neutral dressing room with a private changing stall. We believe small details matter, so we offer hair ties, bobby pins, dry shampoo, spray deodorant, band-aids, and other useful items for our dancers. We want you to feel at home at the Underdog.
