About The Underdog
The Underdog Dance Corp. is Waterloo's first beginner-focused adult dance studio for those who "never thought they would"! If you have two left feet - we want you!
The Studio, People, and Space
We are here to meet you where you're at and help you discover a love for dance and movement. We are often described as Waterloo's most inclusive, encouraging, and friendly space, as well as a "second home" for many of our students. Our studio values are safety, inclusivity, and respect.
The studio is not part of a franchise or chain, but an independent small business. It was founded by a former civil engineer who abandoned a stable career to pursue her passion for dance.
Since its inception in 2020, the studio has grown from a team of 4 instructors to 13, with 1100 students and 30 classes per week, Our instructors are selected not only for their knowledge, but for their ability to make students feel comfortable and safe. We know what it's like to "start from scratch" and you can too. You don't need a partner or any experience to get started - let's dance!
Beautiful and Historic
Our studio was previously a brewery, built in 1939. We are next door to the historic (and heritage designated) Huether Hotel in Uptown Waterloo. We love the big old windows and industrial feel of the space, with lots of natural light during the day and beautiful views of a lit up King Street at night. Rumour has it that there are tunnels underneath the studio from the Prohibition era!
It’s the Little Things
Our studio regularly undergoes updates and upgrades for you as it grows. We are happy to offer a gender neutral dressing room with a changing stall for privacy. We believe the little things make a big difference, so we always have hair elastics, bobby pins, dry shampoo, spray on deodorant, band aids, and other handy items here for our dancers! We want you to feel at home at the Underdog.
OUR TEAM
Underdog instructors are selected not only for their dance knowledge and skill, but also largely for their ability to ensure that our students feel safe, supported, and encouraged. Our team shares a love of dance in all its forms, and wants to share that passion with you!
While some of our instructors have danced competitively since a young age, we all continue to train and learn new styles, skills, and teaching methods. Therefore, we all understand what it is like to be a student of dance as an adult, and structure classes intentionally so that they are accessible and fun!
